Story
James Martin (Service no 2406) was born in Shellharbour, NSW. At the time of enlistment James was single, 22 years of age, employed as a labourer and resided in Shellharbour, NSW.
James embarked on HMAT A1 - Hymettus with the 6th Light Horse Regiment, 16th Reinforcements on 3 May 1916. He arrived in Egypt on 27 June 1916 and joined the 6th Light Horse Regiment on 15 August 1916. James saw service in Egypt and the Middle East and on 6 February 1917 was transferred to the 2nd Light Horse Brigade, B Squadron.
James attended a signal school and returned to 6th Light Horse Regiment on 14 April 1918. He was admitted to hospital a number of time sick and was returned to Australia in July 1919.
James was admitted to the 4th Australian General Hospital at Randwick, NSW as a result of contracting malaria. He was later medically discharged on 14 June 1920.
James is remembered on the Shellharbour Roll of Honour.
James died in 1980.
His brother John Martin enlisted with the New Zealand Army and was killled in action at Ypres, Belgium in 1917.
