Story

John Henry Carr (Service No 629), was born in Chiltern, Victoria around 1882.

At enlistment, he was single, 31 years old, worked as a deckhand and had served with the Cadets. John listed his sister Mrs Shepherd, of Wollongong, NSW, as his next of kin.

He embarked on HMAT A8 Argyllshire, with the Field Artillery Brigade 1, Brigade Ammunition Column, on 18th October 1914. John arrived in Egypt in December 1914, and joined the Mediteranian Expeditionary Force for Gallipoli, on 4th April 1915. He returned to Egypt and was posted to the 2nd Battery in Egypt, on 21st October 1915.

John arrived in France on 27th March 1916, and saw service on the Western Front. There are no woundings recorded on file, and he was returned to Australia for 1914 Special Leave, in October 1918. John was discharged medically unfit on 2nd March 1919.

John was awarded the Military Medal in 1919, the citation reads:

On the morning of 16th September 1918 near ROISEL these three men displayed great gallantry and devotion to duty in the face of an intense concentrated shoot on the battery by the enemy. One gun was hit and the pit and camoflage set alight. The ammunition began to explode but these men dashed down to the gun and extinguished the fire by tearing down the burning camoflage. By their prompt action aand bravery a gun with its sights and ammunition was saved from damage.

Commonwealth Gazette No 115, dated 10th October 1919.
