Story
George Arnold Aldridge (Service No 1905), was born in Hull, England.
At enlistment he was single, 20 years old, worked as a shop assistant and lived in Jamberoo, NSW George listed his brother, Archibald, in England, as his next of kin.
He embarked on HMAT A40 Ceramic, with 1st Battalion, 5th Reinforcement, on 25th June 1915. George arrived in Egypt, and was sent to Gallipoli, arriving on 5th August, where he fought in The Battle of Lone Pine. He survived the battle, and returned to Egypt after the evacuation of the peninsula.
On 13th February 1916, he was transferred to 53rd Battalion, and arrived in France on 25th June 1916. On 19th July, whilst taking part in the Battle of Fromelles, George was wounded in action. He was evacuated to hospital in England, for treatment of a severe gun shot wound to his right leg.
George was repatriated to Australia in May 1917, after his right leg was amputated. He was discharged medically unfit on 27th July 1917.
On 9th October 1917, he re enlisted and served as a Corporal for Home Service, until discharged on 26th February 1918.
George served in World War 2 (Service No V11317), on Home Service, in Victoria.
George died in South Australia in 1948.
