Story
Horace Armstrong (Service No 185/4067), was born in Newport, Victoria around 1893.
At enlistment he was single, 21 years old, worked as a fitter, had served 5 years with the Engineers and lived in Yallah, NSW, where his mother was the Post Mistress. Horace embarked on HMAT A35 Berrima, with the Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (Tropical Unit), for Rabaul, New Guinea, on 19th August 1914. He returned to Australia at the end of his 6 months service, and was discharged, on 14th March 1915.
Horace enlisted in the AIF, on 10th March 1915, before his discharge had come through. He embarked on HMAT A40 Ceramic, with 18th Battalion, A Company, on 25th June 1915. Horace arrived in Egypt, and went on to Gallipoli, Turkey, arriving on 3rd September 1915. He was evacuated, sick, on 4th October 1915, and returning to his unit, in Egypt, on 15th January 1916.
Horace arrived in France, on 9th June 1916, and spent time in hospital, sick, for the rest of 1916 and early 1917. He was transferred to 4th Field Engineers, in April 1917, and served with them until the war ended.
Horace was returned to Australia, in March 1919, and discharged on 22nd July 1919.
