Story

Sidney (Sydney) Joseph Martin Lacey was born on 8 May 1889 to John Thomas and Elizabeth Grace.

Sydney lived with his parents at They lived on Hale Street, Woonona and worked as a miner prior to the war. He was also a member of the Bulli Rifle Club.

At the age of 26, he enlisted in the war and subsequently embarked on 3 May 1916. From July 1916 onwards, Sydney was in and out of hospital at the Front; according to the casualty records on the National Australian Archives he was diagnosed with debility and rheumatism which led to his return. He was listed under ‘Wounded’ in the Sydney Morning Herald on 31 October 1916.

Sydney married Selina Edith Pringle after the war.

Sydney died on 21 October 1968. He and his wife are buried at Bulli Cemetery. He is commemorated at Woonona Bulli RSL as well as Corrimal Public School.
