Story

John Anthony (Service No 2370) was born in Newcastle, NSW in 1872. In 1902 he married Mary Matthews in Newcastle and they came to the Illawarra with their daughter.

At enlistment, John was married, 43 years old, worked as a miner, and the family lived at Corrimal, NSW He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A68 Anchises with 5th Reinforcements, 45th Battalion, on 24th August 1916.

The troops arrived in England on 11th October 1916 and John joined the 45th Battalion in France on 18th January 1917.

In early March 1917 he was admitted to hospital with Trench feet. He was sent back to England on 18th June 1917 and the decision was made to return him to Australia.

John returned to Australia September 1917 and was discharged medically unfit on 29th December 1917.

John died in Newcastle in 1959.
