Story

Thomas Adams (Service No 821) was born in London around 1897.

At enlistment he was single, 18 years old, worked as a farm hand and lived at Unanderra, NSW Thomas listed his father in New Zealand as his next of kin.

Thomas embarked from Sydney on HMAT A72 Beltana with D Company, 30th Battalion, on 9th November 1915 and arrived in Egypt on 11th December 1915.

He served in Egypt until June 1916 when the Battalion left for France. After arriving in France on 23rd June 1916, 30th Battalion were sent to Fromell and served as trench diggers and carriers during the battle of 19/20 July.

On 13th August 1916 Thomas was admitted to hospital sick suffering from otitis media and did not return to his unit until 6th October 1916.

On 14th February 1917 he was sent to hospital in England due to illness.

On 10th June 1918 he was transferred to 5th Machine Gun Battalion and served on the Western Front with them until the war ended.

Thomas was returned to Australia in April 1919 and discharged medically unfit on 26th July 1919.

Thomas returned to New Zealand where he died in 1964.
