Story

Alexander Bailey (Service No 2590/ 2590A) was born in Goulburn, NSW

At enlistment Alexander was single, 25 years old, worked as a labourer, and lived at Dapto, NSW

He embarked from Brisbane on HMAT A48 Seang Bee with 6th Reinforcements, 25th Battalion, on 21st October 1915. The troops arrived in Egypt and Alexander was posted to 9th Battalion on 28th February 1916.

The unit arrived in France on 3rd April 1916 and Alexander saw service on the Western Front. He was admitted to hospital in France on 2nd December 1916 with bronchitis and trench feet and sent to hospital in England for treatment. He returned to France on 11th May 1917.

After fighting at Flanders and Passchendaele Alexander was admitted to hospital in Belgium on 10th October 1917 with trench feet, and returned again to his unit on 6th November 1917.

He was evacuated to hospital in England sick on 17th January 1918 and the decision to repatriate him to Australia was taken. He returned in May 1918 and was discharged medically unfit on 24th July 1918.

In 1923 he married Dorothy Rogan at Lismore, NSW and died in the area in 1961.

Alexander's service is recorded on the Dapto Public School Honour Roll.
