Story

William Croft (Service No 3733) was born in Wollongong, NSW

William enlisted at the age of 27, when he was single and employed as a salesman. He had served previously in the CMF.

William embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A28 Miltiades with 10th Reinforcements on 2nd August 1917 and the troops arrived in England on 2nd October 1917.

William finally arrived in France and joined 35th Battalion there on 19th February 1918. He was admitted to hospital sick with trench fever on 2nd May 1918 and returned to his unit on 25th May.

On 14th July 1918 William was promoted to Lance Corporal. He served on the Western Front until he was killed during fighting on 22nd August.

William is buried in Bray Military Cemetery, France: Plot II, Row I, Grave 16.
