Story

Thomas Austin (Service No 2232) was born in Kiama, NSW about 1870. At the time of enlistment he was a 43 year old carpenter from Wollongong who had served for some years in the Militia. He married Eliza Blake in 1891 and they had 4 children. Thomas embarked on HMAT A 63 Karoola with 6th Reinforcements, 1st Battalion on 16th June 1915 and arrived on Gallipoli on 6th August 1915 where he was wounded in action at Lone Pine on 9th August 1915. He was evacuated to hospital in Egypt for treatment to gun shot wounds to his right hand and arm and was returned to Australia in October 1915 as medically unfit. He spent time receiving treatment in Australia and was discharged on 7th May 1916. Thomas died in 1952.His son George (Service No 4252) was killed in action in May 1917.
