Story
Sidney Lee (Service No 223) was born at Scone, NSW and came to the Illawarra. He was a single 22 year old labourer from Scarborough when he enlisted. His mother is listed as next of kin living, in Wollongong, NSW.
He embarked on HMAT A16 Star of Victoria on 20th October 1914 with A Squadron, 1st Light Horse. As part of the first contingent Sidney would have been present when the HMAS Sydney sank the Emden.
He served in Egypt but in early April, 1915, was admitted to hospital with a sore throat. Sidney was discharged from hospital on 13th April, after the infantry had left for Gallipoli. He arrived on Gallipoli around early May, 1915 and was killed in August during the Lone Pine battle.
His mother wrote to enquire about a small silver shield he wore. In 1923 she received a letter advising that a body exhumed at Kurija Dere was found with a small silver shield, bearing the initials S L. It is not known if this was finally sent to her.
That soldier was buried in Lone Pine Cemetery Row B, Grave 2. Sidney Lee is remembered on the Lone Pine Memorial.
