Story

Hugh Reynolds was born in Catrine, Ayrshire, Scotland about 1893 and had arrived in Australia by 1914. Prior to coming to Australia he had served 3 years in the Royal Scots Fusiliers.

On 11th August 1914 he enlisted in the Special Tropical Force (Service No 880) and went to New Guinea. He was discharged from this service on 18th January 1915.

At the time of enlistment in the AIF Hugh was a single 22 year old miner from Corrimal, NSW. These details should be accepted with some caution as his enlistment papers for the Tropical Force state he was 2 years older the year before. The first enlistment next of kin has been changed from father William to his mother.

Hugh embarked on HMAT A35 Berrima on 25th June 1915 with A Company, 20th Battalion. After training in Egypt he went to Gallipoli and saw service there till he was wounded on 7th October 1915 with a gun shot wound to his left leg. He was evacuated for treatment to the Hospital Ship HS Caledonia, however the wound turned septic and on 10th October he died from his wounds.

Hugh was buried at sea and is remembered on the Lone Pine Memorial.
