Story

David Augustus Smith (Service No 2203) was born in Redfern about 1892. His parents appear to be deceased by the time he enlisted as the only family references are a brother and sister at Corrimal. He is described as a single 23 year old labourer from Corrimal. David embarked on HMAT A63 Karoola on 16th June 1915 with 6th Reinforcements, 2nd Battalion. After arriving in Egypt he was sent to Gallipoli and arrived on 6th August 1915. David went straight into battle with his unit at Lone Pine and was killed in action between 6th and 9th August. He was buried in the trenches at Lone Pine but has no identified grave. David is remembered on the Lone Pine Memorial. His brother Bernard Mathew Smith (Service No 4764) was killed in France on 3rd May 1917.
