Story
Claude Pountney (Service No 905) was born in Moree. The family came to Wollongong, NSW when his the father was posted to Wollongong as a Superintendent of Police. At the time of enlistment he was described as a single 21 year old wool classer.
He embarked on HMAT A8 Argyllshire on 9th April 1915 with 4th Reinforcements, 7th Light Horse. Claude arrived in Egypt and like all the light horsemen was disappointed to be left behind when the Infantry left for Gallipoli. His turn came soon enough annd he arrived on Gallipoli on 22nd May.
Claude was killed at Lone Pine and is buried in Lone Pine Cemetery Plot III, Row B, Grave 25.
His brothers Lt Horace Randolph Pountney (Service No 18724) , 3rd Division Artillery, returned to Australia, 15 May 1919; and Gunner Cyprus Sebastian Pountney (Service No 2862) 7th Field Artillery Brigade, returned to Australia, 1 July 1919.
