Story
Leonard John Banfield was born in Cobbity, NSW in 1875. When Leonard enlisted with the AIF at the age of 39 years and 11 months, he was married with 4 children, and worked as a school teacher. Leonard's wife was Mary Bridget Banfield.
Leonard had previously served 8 years with the 1st Australian Infantry Regiment and 21st Infantry Brigade, as well as 3 1/2 years with the 2nd Regiment, NSW
Leonard was appointed to the rank of Captain on 24 June 1915, 3 weeks after signing up.
He served at the Regimental Headquarters in Australia before deployment to Egypt and Gallipoli.
On 22 August 1915 Leonard was killed in action at Gallipoli, Turkey. There is no known grave for Leonard. He is commemorated at the Lone Pine Memorial (Panel 59) at Gallipoli.
