Story
William Aito (Service No 2992) was born at Shellharbour, NSW He enlisted with the AIF on 14 August 1916, stating his age as 42 on his enlisted papers.
At the time of his enlistment, William was a widower, his wife, Mary J Makin, having died in 1913. He was working as a plumber and drainer and nominated his sister, Mrs Sarah McInerney of Ross Street, Forest Lodge, Sydney, as his next of kin.
William was medically discharged due to acute haemorrhoids, having been hospitalised for this condition a number of time during his service.
He returned to Australia on board the HMAT Demosthenes.
William died in 1922.
