Story
George Womack (Service No 196) was born in Norfolk, England in May 1889 and baptised on 31st August 1889. His father was a farmer. Just before the war George travelled to Australia with a horse bound for the Cotterell family at Broughton Village, NSW. He decided to enlist while here and stated he was a single 23 year old farmer.He embarked on HMAT A16 Star of Victoria on 20th October 1914 with A Squadron, 1st Light Horse. George arrived in Egypt and saw service there until sent to Gallipoli, arriving on 12th May 1915. The troops saw plenty of action in the area of Popes Hill and the general area around Quinns post until the August battles.George was killed at Popes Hill on 7th August, 1915 and has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial.The Official History of Australia in the War of 1914-1918 , edited by the official historian Charles Bean, states that George Womack was desperately ill and should not have been taking part in the battle in which he was killed - Vol 2, p. 610, note 23.
