Story
Gordon Butt (Service No 2564) was born in Albury, NSW about 1896. At the time of enlistment he was a single 19 year old clipper at Helensburgh who had served 12 months in the CMF. He embarked on HMAT A54 Runic on 9th August 1915 with 8th Reinforcements 1st Battalion and saw service on Gallipoli. After the evacuation he spent time in Egypt.
Gordon was then sent to the Western Front. On 9th April 1917 at Demicourt France he was killed. His Red Cross file states he was shot in the head by a German Officer while clearing a German Trench. He was serving in 3 Platoon A Company at the time.
He has no known grave and is remembered on the Australian National Memorial at
Villers-Bretonneaux. His brother Frank Butt (Service No 3794) served at the Weston Front and returned to Australia in June 1919.
