Story
Private Frederick John Aitken (Service No 4972) was born in Wollongong and attended Unanderra Public School. His father, Edward Aitken, was an Inspector of Fisheries. Prior to enlisting he worked as a labourer. He embarked on HMAT A55 Kyarra with 13th reinforcements, 18th battalion on 5th June, 1916. He saw service on the Western Front. He arrived in France in early November, 1916, and was seriously wounded soon after. On 15th November, 1916, Frederick received a gun shot wound to his leg; he also became seriously ill and he was evacuated to England for treatment. He returned to Australia on the HMAT Miltiades on 5th July,1917, and was discharged as medically unfit on 8th October, 1917. In 1920 he married Gladys Brien. He died in Newcastle on 27th November, 1944 and is buried in Sandgate cemetery, no. 3, grave no. 283.
