Thomas Leslie Clarke
Thomas Clarke was born in Woonona, N.S.W.
At enlistment Thomas was single, 25 years old, worked as a bread carter and lived at Bulli, N.S.W. A few days before he was accepted into the Remount Unit, Thomas had been rejected for the infantry, due to problems with his eyesight.
He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A67 Orsova with Australian Remount Unit 2, Sqadron 6, on 10th November 1915. He arrived in Egypt and served there for the duration of the war, being promoted to acting Company Sergeant Major in early 1919.
Thomas returned to Australia in June 1919 and was discharged medically unfit on 4th February 1920.
On 1st September 1924 he married Bessie Appleton in Sydney and the couple went on to have 2 children.
Thomas enlisted for service in World War II, and served as a Staff Sergeant (Service No N230158) with 9th Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps from 31st March 1942 to 20th July 1944.
Thomas died in 1965 and is buried in Eastern Suburbs Cemetery.
The Bulli-Woonona War Mermorial lists a T Clarke whose service in World War I is commemorated.
