Arthur Sidney Marriott
Private Arthur Marriott (Service no: 4764) was born and raised in Mount Kembla. His enlistment papers indicate that he was a ward of the state and Mark and Mary Hayward were his legal guardians, also listed is a Mrs H Castle as mother.
He embarked on HMAT A40 Ceramic on 14th April, 1916 with 12th Reinforcements 18th Battalion. After arrival in Egypt he transferred to 57th Battalion and saw service on the Western Front. On the 27th March, 1917 after the worst winter in 40 years he was admitted to hospital with trench feet. He returned to the fighting and was wounded in action on 12th July, 1918. He received a gun shot wound to his ankle.
He returned to Australia in May 1919 and was discharged from the AIF on 15th August, 1919 and returned to Mount Kembla. He gained employment as a storeman and had a family with Glenda Lalor.
