Private Charles McCarter (1798) was born in Lanark, Scotland in 1894. He moved to Australia and prior to his enlistment in the AIF he was a miner living at Carluke Cottage, Mount Kembla.

He embarked on HMAT Argyllshire A8 with 4th Reinforcements 2nd Battalion. He saw service on Gallipoli and the Western Front.

On 19th February, 1917 he married Annie Faulkener in Scotland while on leave. He returned to the fighting only to be killed in action on the 26th June, 1918. He is buried in La Kreule Military Cemetery France. Plot 1, Row F, Grave 16.
