Albert James Garrett (Service No 2788) was born in Wollongong, N.S.W., in 1894.

At enlistment in Armidale, N.S.W., he was  22 years old, single and worked as a labourer.

Albert embarked on HMAT A72 Beltana with the 34th Battalion, 6th Reinforcement, on 25th November 1916. He disembarked in England on 29th January 1917 and joined the 34th Battalion, B Company in the field on 19th June 1917. Albert saw service on the Western Front in 1917.

In 1918, he got himself into trouble and was returned to Australia in July 1919, under supervision.

Albert was discharged on 19th Sepember 1919.
