William Hindley (Service No 2650) was born in Macclesfield, England, in October 1881.

Before coming to Australia in 1914, he had served 8 years with the British Army. William served with the 10th Hussars in the Boer War and then served in India from 1903 until 1905, before returning to South Africa from 1905 until 1908.

On 10th July 1914, William married Margaret Davey.

At enlistment he was 33 years old and worked as a cabinet maker. Margaret was pregnant with their child, when William embarked on HMAT A14 Euripides with the 19th Battalion, 6th Reinforcement, on 2nd November 1915. After disembarking in Egypt he was transferred to the 4th Battalion on 14th February 1916.

William arrived in France on 30th March 1916 and served as a signaller with the 4th Battalion, B Company, at Pozieres, where he was killed in action on 24th July.

William has no known grave and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
