George Henry Cooke (Service No 709) was born in Cooma, N.S.W.

At enlistment he was 24 years old, single, worked as a labourer and lived in Nowra, N.S.W.

George embarked on HMAT A21 Marere with the 6th Light Horse Regiment, 2nd Reinforcement, on 20th February 1915. He arrived in Egypt and was sent to Gallipoli on 6th August 1915. George was evacuated to hospital with debility on 17th October 1915, rejoining his unit in Egypt on 23rd February 1916. He saw service in Egypt and the Middle East and has no wounding on file but suffered from illnesses associated with desert conditions.George was returned to Australia in July 1919 and discharged.

George died in 1980 and is buried in Nowra Cemetery.

George's brother, Richard Cooke (Service No 5068) also served.
