William David Cramond (Service No 5069), was born in Jamberoo, N.S.W.

William enlisted in Nowra, N.S.W., with the Waratah March.  He was single, and worked as a blacksmith.  William stated his age as 18 years, but In fact, he was only 17 years of age.

He embarked from Sydney on SS Makarini, with the 1st Battalion, 16th Reinforcement, on 1st April 1916.  He arrived in France on 17th May 1916 and joined the 1st Battalion in the field on 27th June 1916.

On 29th September 1916, William was wounded whilst serving on the Somme, France, but remained on duty.  He was admitted to hospital for treatment of trench feet on 6th November 1916.

William returned to the front but had a number of hospital admissions; he was again admitted to hospital on 6th March 1918 suffering from heart problems.

William was returned to Australia in January 1919 and discharged medically unfit on 29th June 1919.

In 1921 he married Dorothy Westbrook at Homebush in Sydney, and the couple raised 4 children. William worked for the N.S.W. Water Board after the war.  In 1938 a workplace accident saw him lose his lower arm.

William died at Concord Hospital in 1952.  His service is commemorated on the Barrengarry School Roll of Honor and the Kangaroo Valley War Memorial,.
