Thomas Hayes (Service No 6535) was born in Bega, N.S.W. in 1880.

Thomas enlisted in Kiama; he was single, 32 years old, worked as a labourer and lived at nearby Bombo.  He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A40 Ceramic with 13th Battalion, 21st Reinforcement on 7th October 1916.

He arrived in England on 21st November 1916 and joined C Company, 13th Battalion in France on 12th February 1917.

Thomas was fighting at Bullecourt on 11th April 1917 when he was wounded in action.  He was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of serious gun shot wounds to his head thigh and leg, his face and left eye causing the most concern.  On 13th May 1918 his left eye was excised and he was repatriated to Australia in late December 1918.

Thomas was discharged medically unfit from the AIF on 31st May 1919.

He died in Kiama in 1965; Thomas' service is commemorated on the Kiama Memorial Arch and Honour Rolls.
