James Cowan (Service No 7700) was born in Queenietown, Scotland in 1896.

At enlistment James was single, and gave his age as 21 years old - he was in fact, only 18 years of age.  He worked as a labourer and lived at Bulli, N.S.W.

He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A38 Ulysses with 2nd Batttalion, 26th Reinforcement, on 19th December 1917.

James arrived in England on 13th February 1918 and joined 2nd Battalion in France on 22nd May 1918.  He saw service until the end of the war and returned to Australia in July 1919. 

He was discharged from the AIF on 22nd December 1919.

On 5th December 1919 James married Alice King in Sydney, but they were divorced in 1938.

James died in Sydney in 1965.
