Details:

William Burtenshaw (Service No 557) was born in Worthington, Norfolk, England and arrived in Australia in June 1907.  He had served with the Sussex Regiment in England before coming to Australia.

At enlistment he was single, 34 years old, worked as a labourer, and lived in Bulli, N.S.W.  William embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A14 Euripides with 4th Battalion, G Company, on 20th October 1914.  He arrived in Egypt with the first contingent in December 1914. The 4th Battalion landed on Gallipoli on 25th April 1915.

William was admitted to hospital sick in Egypt and arrived on Gallipoli only to be returned to Egypt in July 1915.  He was sent back to Gallipoli on 1st August but was again returned to Egypt; his war documents are unclear as to why this was but he seems to have been held back due to health problems.

William was returned to Australia in November 1915 and discharged medically unfit due to rheumatism, with a pension, on 29th February 1916.

On 29th September 1916 he married Annie McLauchlan at Mortlake, Sydney, and the couple had 4 children.

William died in Sydney in 1955.
