Thomas Simpson
Thomas Simpson (Service No 5228) was born in Murrumburrah, N.S.W.
Thomas enlisted in Kiama, N.S.W. after taking part in the Waratah March; he was single, 21 years old, worked as a labourer, and lived at Kiama. He embarked from Sydney on board SS Makarini with 1st Battalion, 16th Reinforcement on 1st April 1916.
He arrived in France on 17th May 1916 but was admitted to hospital only a month later, on 17th June 1916, and diagnosed with chronic valvular heart disease. He was subsequently deemed unfit for active service and repatriated to Australia in August 1916 where he was admitted to hospital at Georges Heights, Sydney.
Thomas was discharged medically unfit, with a pension, on 30th March 1917.
On 3rd April 1921 he married Elsie Taggart and the couple raised 3 children.
Thomas enlisted for service during World War II (Service No N241745), serving part-time from 9th April 1942 to 14th June 1944, with 10th Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps.
Thomas died in 1963 and is buried in Woronora Cemetery, N.S.W.
