Herbert Murray (Service No 5790) was born in Moss Vale, N.S.W.  In April 1914 he married Maud Oxman in Wollongong, N.S.W.

At enlistment Herbert was 27 years old, worked as a miner and he and Maud lived at Balgownie, near Wollongong.  He embarked from Melbourne on HMAT A38 Ulysses with Tunnelling Company Reinforcements on 25th October 1916.  Herbert arrived in England on 28th December 1916 and joined 3rd Tunnelling Company in France on 6th February 1917.

Herbert saw service on the Western Front; he was promoted to Lance Corporal on 17th May 1918 and then made Corporal on 2nd February 1919.

He returned to Australia in May 1919 and was discharged from the AIF on 7th August 1919.

He and Maud went to have 3 children.  Herbert died in Wollongong in 1956.

His service is commemorated on the Balgownie War Memorial 1914-1918.
