James Chapman (Service No 7826) was born in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England.

At enlistment James was single, 30 years old, employed as a telephone and electrical mechanic and lived in Wollongong, N.S.W.  He had completed his training as a telephone & electrical mechanic before enlisting. 

James embarked from Melbourne on HMAT A71 Nestor with Tunnelling Companies (Sept 1916 - Feb 1918 Reinforcement) on 21st November 1917.  He arrived in England on 24th January 1918 and joined 2nd Tunnelling Company in the field, in France, on 2nd March 1918.

James saw service as a miner on the Western Front and was discharged from the AIF in London on 21st August 1919 and stayed in England and returned to his former home in Somerset.  On 7th September 1921 married Elsie Mathews and they had one child.

James died in hospital in Somerset in 1966.
