John McKenzie (Service No 5434) was born in Mittagong, N.S.W.

At enlistment John was single, 24 years old, worked as a miner and lived in Helensburgh, N.S.W.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A18 Wiltshire with 19th Battalion, 14th Reinforcement on 22nd August 1916.  He arrived in England on 13th October 1916 and joined 19th Battalion in France on 18th December 1916.

On 28th February 1917 John was wounded in action and evacuated to hospital for treatment of a severe gun shot wound to his chest.  He returned to duty on 1st August 1917. 

He was admitted to hospital sick on 15th May 1918 and returned to Australia in August 1918.  John was discharged from the AIF, medically unfit, on 9th February 1919.

John returned to Mittagong where he died in 1920.

John's service is commemorated on the Helensburgh Roll of Honour.
