After arriving in Egypt he was transferred to 1st Field Artillery on 10th March 1916 and was assigned to dutes as a shoesmith on 17th March.  John saw service on the Western Front.  He was promoted to Corporal on 3rd October 1918.

John was returned to Australia in April 1919 and discharged from the AIF on 3rd August 1919.

In 1920 he married Ann Richardson in Wollongong, NSW and the couple moved to the nearby suburb of Fairy Meadow.

John died in September 1975 at the age of 85.
