John Hooper (Service No 3794) was born in Newcastle, England in October 1890 and came to Australia with his family soon after.

At enlistment John was single, 25 years old, worked as a blacksmith, and lived at Balgownie, NSW.  He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A29 Suevic with 13th Battalion, 12th Reinforcement on 20th December 1915.

After arriving in Egypt he was transferred to 1st Field Artillery on 10th March 1916 and was assigned to dutes as a shoesmith on 17th March.  John saw service on the Western Front.  He was promoted to Corporal on 3rd October 1918.

John was returned to Australia in April 1919 and discharged from the AIF on 3rd August 1919.

In 1920 he married Ann Richardson in Wollongong, NSW and the couple moved to the nearby suburb of Fairy Meadow.

John died in September 1975 at the age of 85.

The Balgownie War Memorial 1914-1918 has a W Hooper listed and it is thought this may be John William Hooper.
