William Hennessy (Service No 5122) was born in Sydney.

William enlisted after joining the Waratah March; he was single, 22 years old, worked as a farm labourer, and lived at Berry, N.S.W.

He embarked from Sydney on SS Makarini with 1st Battalion, 16th Reinforcement on 1st April 1916 along with many other Waratah March enlistees.

He arrived in France on 17th May 1916 after a stop in Egypt.  William joined 1st Battalion in the field on 11th July 1916 but was admitted to hospital sick on 16th July.  He was sent on to England for treatment of foot problems, but surgery failed to rectify the problem and he was returned to Australia in July 1917.

William was discharged medically unfit due to his foot problems on 22nd October 1917.  He returned to Berry and died in Wollongong, N.S.W. in March 1949.

William's service is commemorated on the Berry School of Arts Roll of Honour.
