Raymond West Walker
Raymond West Walker (Service No 2506), was born in Kiama, N.S.W.
At enlistment he was 20 years old, married, worked as a grocer, lived in Kiama, N.S.W., and had served 4 years service with 37th Infantry Militia. Raymond listed his wife, Martha, from Dapto, N.S.W., as his next of kin. The couple had married in Dapto, N.S.W., in 1916, and had 2 children.
Raymond embarked on HMAT A60 Aeneas, with the 56th Battalion, 5th Reinforcement, on 30th September 1916. He arrived in England on 19th November 1916, and joined the 56th Battalion, C Company, in France, on 7th February 1917. Raymond was wounded in action on 2nd April 1917 and admitted to hospital with shell shock. He returned to his unit on 7th May 1917.
On 3rd October 1917, Raymond was promoted to Lance Corporal. On 30th November 1917, he was admitted to hospital suffering with trench foot. Raymond's right foot caused a lot of trouble and he remained in England for some time. He was returned to Australia in December 1918 due to defective vision, and discharged medically unfit, on 10th April 1919.
Raymond remained in Kiama, N.S.W., and died there in 1974.
