He embarked on HMAT A8 Argyllshire, with the Field Artillery Brigade 1, Battery 3, on 18th October 1914. Edward arrived in Egypt in December 1914. He was admitted to hospital on 28th July 1915 with rheumatism, but his file is unclear about where he was evacuated from. Edward was returned to Australia in December 1915, and discharged medically unfit on 23rd May 1916. A letter on file in 1947, requests a copy of his discharge papers that were lost with all his belongings, when the ship he was on was torpedoed by the enemy.

Edward ran for council in 1917.

He is commemorated for his service on the Corrimal Roll of Honour.
