William Dawes (Service No 5563) was born in Kiama, N.S.W.  On 21st December 1904 he married Florence Robertson.

At enlistment William was 41 years old & worked as a dairy farmer in the Kiama district.   He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A14 Euripides with 19th Battalion, 15th Reinforcement on 9th September 1916.

The troops arrived in England on 26th October 1916 and William joined 19th Battalion, C Company in France on 18th December 1916.

William saw service on the Western Front with 19th Battalion until 13th June 1917, when he was detached as a batman for the Divisional Canteen, returning to his previous unit on 6th November 1917.

He returned to Australia in July 1919 and was discharged on 17th October 1919.

After the war William worked as a council health inspector and was a member of the Kiama R.S.L.

In 1948 he married Hilda Heaton in Kiama.

William died in 1954.  He is buried in Robertson Cemetery, N.S.W.
