Donald Frederick McIntosh
Donald McIntosh (Service No 2644) was born in Belgaum, India, to British parents. His family returned to Britain soon after his birth. Before arriving in Australia, Donald served for 7 years in the Royal Navy. After arriving in Australia he married Gertrude Henry at Woollahra, Sydney, in 1910. Donald & Gertrude went on to have 2 children but divorced after the war.
At enlistment Donald was 31 years old, worked as a labourer, and lived at Dapto, N.S.W. He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A54 Runic with 2nd Battalion, 8th Reinforcement on 9th August 1915. After arriving in Egypt he joined 2nd Battalion at Gallipoli on 4th November 1915.
Following his service in the Middle East, Donald arrived in France with 2nd Battalion on 4th April 1916 and saw service on the Western Front. His file contains very little detail, but at some time he was transferred to the 1st Machine Gun Battalion.
Donald was granted leave for work in England from 25th March 1919 until 25th September 1919. He was returned to Australia in October 1919 and discharged from the AIF on 9th January 1920.
Donald died in Sydney in 1956.
