Herbert Hay (Service No 2823) was born in Warren, NSW around 1888.

At enlistment Herbert was single, 28 years old, worked as a brick setter and lived in Bulli, NSW;  he had served 3 years with the Militia.  Herbert nominated his brother William Hay of Woonona, NSW as his next of kin.

Herbert embarked from Sydney on HMAT A24 Benalla with 3rd Pioneer Battalion, 5th Reinforcements on 9th November 1916.  He arrived in England on 9th January 1917 and joined the 3rd Pioneer Battalion in France on 16th April 1917.

He saw service on the Western Front with the Pioneers until 5th June 1918 when he transferred to 3rd Machine Gun Battalion.

Herbert was returned to Australia in June 1919 and discharged medically unfit on 18th September 1919.
