Joseph William Richards (Service No 5213), was born in Nelligen, N.S.W.

At enlistment with the Waratah March, he was single, 37 years old, worked as a labourer and had served with the Militia.

Joseph embarked on SS Makarini with the 1st Battalion, 16th Reinforcement, on 1st April 1916. He arrived in England on 2nd May 1916, and joined the1st Battalion in France, on 27th July 1916. On 18th August 1916, Joseph was admitted to hospital due to varicose veins. He finally rejoined the 1st Battalion,on 9th January 1917. Joseph returned to hospital later that month, and was returned to England, where he was deemed unfit for further active service. Joseph was repatriated to Australia in July 1917 and after further treatment, was discharged medically unfit with a pension, on 9th November 1917.

Joseph died in Temora, N.S.W., in 1951.
