Roy Holcombe King
Roy Holcombe King (Service No 1352), was born in Goulburn, N.S.W., but spent his childhood at Berkeley, N.S.W.
At enlistment, he was single, 34 years old and worked as a farmer.
Roy embarked on HMAT A40 Ceramic, with the 19th Battalion, D Company, on 22nd June 1915. He disembarked in Egypt, and was sent to Gallipoli, Turkey, on 21st August 1915. On 3rd September 1915, Roy was in a trench near Hill 60, when a shell exploded and he was hit in the abdomen. He was taken to the 16th Casualty Clearing Station for treatment, but died the next day. Roy's grave is unknown, but he has a headstone in No 2 Outpost Cemetery, Special Memorial No 1.
A letter sent to Roy's aunt was published in the Illawarra Mercury, on 28th September 1915, where he described his trip to Egypt.
