Alfred Samuel Smart (Service No 6311), was born in Goulburn, N.S.W., in 1886.

At enlistment in Kiama, N.S.W., he was single, 29 years old, worked as a wheeler and lived in Coledale, N.S.W.

Alfred embarked on HMAT A14 Euripides, with 13th Battalion, 20th Reinforcement, on 9th September 1916. He arrived in England on 26th October 1916, and joined 13th Battalion in France, on 5th February 1917. Alfred saw service on the Western Front until 3rd May 1917, when he was wounded in action. He was evacuated to hospital for treatment of a gun shot wound to his right arm. Alfred was deemed unfit for further active service, and repatriated to Australia, in February 1918. Further treatment in Australia was needed, and he was discharged medically unfit, due to the injury to his right elbow, on 20th September 1918.

In 1923, Alfred married Lucy Thomson.

Alfred died in 1952.
