John James Marshall (Service No 2489), was born in Sheffield, England around 1894.

At enlistment, he was single, 22 years old, worked as a motor mechanic and lived in Corrimal, N.SW.

John embarked on HMAT A67 Orsova, with 3rd Battalion, 7th Reinforcement, on 14th July 1915. He arrived in Egypt, and went to Gallipoli on 30th October 1915, serving there until the evacuation. John returned to Egypt, and was transferred to 55th Battalion, on 14th February 1916. He remained in Egypt for 6 months, until he joined the 55th Battalion in France, on 30th August 1916, luckily missing the Fromelles Battle.

On 14th August 1916, John was promoted to Corporal. He saw service on the Western Front and has no wounding recorded on his file.

John was transferred to the Postal Corps, on 5th August 1918, and served in England until 25th September 1919, when he returned to Australia. John was discharged on 16th January 1920.

John returned to England in 1920.
