Matthew Tennant (Service no 4598/1540) was born in Scotland and immigrated to Australia.

At the time of enlistment Matthew was single, 36 years of age, employed as a mechanic and resided in Scarborough, NSW.

Matthew embarked on RMS Osterley with the 2nd Battalion, 14th Reinforcements on 15 January 1916.  Matthew arrived in Egypt on 27 March 1916 and was then sent to France arriving on 3 April 1916.

Matthew joined the 2nd Battalion in the field on 14 May 1916.  The battalion took part in the battle for Pozieres and Matthew was wounded in action sometime between 22 and 24 July 1916.  He was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of serious gun shot wounds to his left leg, knee and ankle.

Matthew was deemed unfit for further active service and was repatriated to Australia in May 1917.  He was discharged as medically unfit with a pension on 3 August 1917.

On 20 September 1918, Matthew was accepted for service in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea with the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force and embarked on Melusia on 2 October 1918.  Matthew served in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea until 29 September 1919 when he was returned to Australia.

Matthew died in Wallsend, NSW in 1956.
