William Ryan (Service No 366) was born in Sydney, NSW in 1894.

At the time of enlistment William was single, 20 years of age and employed as a barman at the family hotel at Bulli, NSW. William's mother was the licensee. William had previously served 4 years with the Cadets and 2 years with 37th Infantry Militia.

William embarked on HMATA 14 - Euripides with the 3rd Battalion, B Company on 19 October 1914. He was promoted to Lance Corporal during his training in Egypt on 13 March 1915.

William landed in Gallipoli, Turkey on 25 April 1915 and served there until 3 May 1915 when he was wounded in action. William was evacuated to hospital for treatment of a gun shot wound to his neck and was transferred to a hospital in England for further treatment.

William joined the 13th Battalion in France on 20 October 1916 but found his way back to 3rd Battalion on 27 December 1916. William sustained further injuries which saw him hospitalised in 1917.

William returned to his unit France on 18 March 1918.

William was returned to Australia in October 1918 for the Special 1914 Leave and was discharged on 3 February 1919.
