William Gallen (Service No 4684) was born in Shellharbour, N.S.W. in August 1884.

At enlistment William was single, 31 years old and worked as a labourer.  He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A40 Ceramic with 18th Battalion, 12th Reinforcement on 13th April 1916.  After arriving in England, William was sent to France where he joined B Company, 18th Battalion on 23rd September 1916.

William was admitted to hospital for treatment of a gun shot wound to his left hand on 9th November 1916, returning to his unit on 13th January 1917.

On 20th May 1918 he was wounded in action and taken to 47th Casualty Clearing Station for treatment of shrapnel wounds to his leg, arm and abdomen. William was seriously wounded and died from his wounds the same day.

He is buried in Crouy British Cemetery Plot 11, Row C, Grave 8.

William's brother Augustus also served.
