John James Cavanagh (Service No 6295A), was born in Mudgee, N.S.W.

At enlistment he was 26 years old, single, worked as a labourer, lived in Otford, N.S.W., and had served 3 months with the Senior Cadets.

John embarked on HMAT A 29 Suevic with the 19th Battalion, 18th Reinforcement, on 11th November 1916. He disembarked in England on 30th January 1917, then went on to France, arriving there on 25th April 1917.

On 13th May 1917, John joined the Machine Gun Section of the 19th Battalion .He saw service on the Western Front until 18th April 1918 when he was wounded in action. John was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of severe gas poisoning. He returned to his unit on 17th September 1918. John was returned to Australia in June 1919 and discharged on 15th September 1919. 

John died in 1964 and is buried in Woden Cemetery, A.C.T.
