Ernest Trevethan (Service No 5242) was born at Yalwal, N.S.W.  In 1914 he married Olive Dargaville at Bulli, N.S.W.

Ernest joined the Waratah March and enlisted at Stanwell Park, N.S.W.  At the time he was 25 years old, worked as a labourer and lived at Bellambi, N.S.W.  He embarked from Sydney on SS Makarini with 1st Battalion, 16th Reinforcement on 1st April 1916.

After arriving in France on 14th May 1916, Ernest joined 1st Battalion on 18th June 1916.  He took part in his first battle at Pozieres and was evacuated wounded with shell shock in July 1916. He returned to 1st Battalion on 20th September 1916.

On 27th December 1916 Ernest was transferred to the Light Rail and served on the Western Front with them.

On 30th May 1917 he was admitted to hospital for treatment of trench fever.

Ernest returned to Australia in May 1919 but it was a sad homecoming - he was met by his mother and sister who had to tell him his wife had died a few days before from pneumonia.

Ernest was discharged on 15th August 1919.

In 1924 he married Mary Smith and they had 3 children.  Ernest died in 1966 and is buried in Nowra Cemetery, N.S.W.
