James Knight (Service No 1927) was born in Bulli, NSW.

At the time of enlistment James was single, 22 years of age and employed as a porter in Woonona, NSW. James previously served 5 years with the Army Cadets and Citizen Military Forces.

James embarked from Melbourne on the HMAT A17 - Port Lincoln with the 59th Battalion, 3rd Reinforcements on 4 May 1916. He arrived in Egypt on 10 June 1916 and then was sent to England arriving on 21 August 1916.

After training in England, James was transferred to 57th Battalion joining them in France on 7 February 1917.

James was admitted to hospital in England on 28 February 1917. He saw service on the Western Front with his unit but was returned to Australia in January 1919 and medically discharged on 24 April 1919.

On 8 June 1925 James married Irene Huckstep in Bulli, NSW and together they raised 2 children.

James returned to the railways and retired as a Station Master. James died in Byron Bay, NSW in 1972.
